Imphal: The Indian government has established a high-level committee to investigate demographic shifts resulting from illegal immigration and other abnormal causes. This move follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's August 2025 announcement regarding a high-powered demography mission, which received formal cabinet approval in September.

Retired Justice Prakash Prabhakar Navlekar will lead the panel. Its members include the Census Commissioner, former bureaucrats Durga Shankar Mishra and Balaji Srivastava, and economist Dr. Shamika Ravi. A Joint Secretary from the Ministry of Home Affairs will act as the member secretary.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized that unnatural demographic changes threaten national security, social stability, and the integrity of tribal communities. The committee is charged with analyzing shifts in population structures across various religious and social groups.

The panel's mandate covers the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants, as well as strategies to improve border management. It will also examine the need for better coordination between federal and state authorities to manage population stability. The committee must submit its findings within one year, though the Ministry of Home Affairs retains the option to extend this timeline by six months if necessary.
