Guwahati: The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has officially rejected claims that critical mineral deposits were discovered in the Tukreswari and Sijukona Hills of Assam's Goalpara district. The Ministry of Mines issued a clarification on May 26 to correct reports suggesting the presence of valuable materials like lithium, graphite, cobalt, and vanadium in the area.
Officials stated that previous field studies conducted in the southern Agia region between 2012 and 2014 were strictly preliminary investigations. These surveys focused on Rare Earth Elements (REE) and did not reveal any reserves suitable for commercial extraction. According to the GSI, the concentration of these elements was measured below 1000 parts per million. This result falls well beneath the threshold required by the Indian Bureau of Mines for detailed exploration, leading the agency to conclude that no further programs were necessary.
The GSI further emphasized that it never issued any notification regarding mineral discoveries near the Tukreswari Temple. Existing data from past studies remains accessible to the public through the agency's website and the National Geoscience Data Repository. Authorities have requested that media outlets verify information with official sources before publishing reports that might cause public confusion.
