Kohima: The Kohima Bench of the Gauhati High Court recently delivered several key rulings, including the settlement of a multi-year church dispute, the establishment of a permanent legal examination center in Nagaland, and the confirmation of a bank employee's firing for financial misconduct.
A division bench led by Justice Manish Choudhury and Justice Pranjal Das finalized the closure of a church legal battle on June 10. The case originated in 2017 when the Assemblies of God of East India suspended a Reverend following a controversy in Wokha district. After years of litigation, the parties reached an agreement in March 2026 to drop all pending actions. They resolved the matter in a spirit of "forgiveness, reconciliation and unity," agreeing to end the conflict permanently.
In a separate ruling the same day, the court addressed a public interest litigation regarding the All India Bar Examination. Local advocates previously argued that the lack of a state-based testing center forced law graduates to travel outside Nagaland to qualify for practice. The Bar Council of India confirmed that a testing site was successfully piloted in Kohima on June 7, with 56 candidates participating. Following a formal undertaking from the council to maintain a permanent centre in the state, the court dismissed the petition.
Finally, Justice Choudhury upheld the dismissal of a Nagaland Rural Bank employee on June 11. The former staff member, who served as a branch in-charge, was fired after a 2017 investigation revealed he had diverted customer funds and manipulated accounts. Although the employee claimed the disciplinary process was flawed, the court noted he had previously admitted to the misconduct. Stressing that financial institutions must uphold public trust, the judge ruled that the removal from service was appropriate and rejected the challenge.
