Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court postponed the bail hearing for Shyamkanu Mahanta on Friday, moving the proceedings to May 25. Mahanta, who organizes the North East India Festival, has been in custody since last year following the death of singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore.

During Friday's session, defense attorney Pran Bora urged the court to grant his client relief. However, Advocate General Devajit Lon Saikia requested more time to prepare the state government's opposition to the bail request. The court granted this request and scheduled the next hearing for Monday.

This legal development follows a previous unsuccessful attempt by Mahanta to secure bail. A fast-track court in Guwahati rejected his application in April after the prosecution argued against his release. While the court delivered the operative portion of that earlier decision, officials have indicated that the full detailed judgment is still pending.
