Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court granted bail to land rights activist Adit Chandra Rabha. Rabha acts as an advisor to the Borduar Bagan Bhumi Potton Daabi Xomiti. His release marks a win for the Bhumi Odhikar Joutho Xongram Xomitihas.
Committee convenors Gobinda Chandra Rabha and Subrat Talukdar claim the Assam government hit the activist with frivolous charges. They argue the state wanted to silence his work against a proposed satellite township. The project threatens to displace indigenous families living in the Rabha Hasong area.
The group views the arrest as part of a wider state campaign against grassroots organizers. They pointed to the detention of Pranab Doley under the National Security Act as evidence of this pattern. Doley faced pressure after he opposed a large hotel project near Kaziranga National Park. Officials remain under fire for the heavy-handed approach.
The Xomiti thanked senior advocate Shantanu Borthakur and his legal team for the court victory. They also credited supporters across Assam for backing the case. "The release of our comrade Adit Chandra Rabha from prison has further energised our future struggle," the committee stated in a press release.
The group plans to keep fighting. They will block projects that risk mass land acquisition or evictions of local people. Rabha's return from jail gives them fresh momentum.
