Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court rejected the bail plea of Shyamkanu Mahanta on Friday, mandating that he remain in judicial custody as the legal proceedings continue. The division bench reached this decision after reserving its order on May 22, marking the second time the High Court has denied Mahanta relief in this matter.
Special Public Prosecutor Ziaul Kamar stated that while the defence may seek further legal remedies in higher courts, the prosecution is currently awaiting a detailed copy of the ruling to understand the specific grounds for the rejection. Mahanta had previously sought relief from the High Court after his request was turned down by a special Fast Track Court on April 30.
A special Fast Track Court in Guwahati recently framed charges against seven individuals involved in the death of renowned Assamese musician Zubeen Garg, who passed away on September 19, 2025, in Singapore. These charges include murder, culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, extortion, and cheating under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
As the trial for all seven accused is set to commence on June 8, the Fast Track Court is also processing bail applications for four other defendants: Amritaprabha Mahanta, Sandipan Garg, Paresh Baishya, and Nandeshwar Bora. The verdict on these four pleas is expected to be delivered on the same day the trial begins.
