Shillong: A two-day workshop aimed at expanding Muga silk production through scientific organic farming began Tuesday at the Farmers Training Centre in Jengjal Bolbokgre. The initiative operates under the PM-DevINE project and seeks to strengthen the rural economy in the Garo Hills by improving the yield of the golden-hued silk.
This collaborative effort involves the District Sericulture Office of West Garo Hills, the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach, and the Central Silk Board. During the opening, Deputy Director of Sericulture Sanre G Momin highlighted the potential for growth in the region. She stated, "The region possesses ample land for cultivation and suggested that exposure trips would help beneficiaries adopt modern techniques to improve their yield."
District Mission Manager Michelle Momin explained how the MSRLS and the Sericulture department are working together to create Muga clusters. Experts provided technical guidance throughout the event, including presentations on rearing technology from SAS Rahman and an introduction to the farm lab concept by Dr. Sunita Upadhya. Functional Manager Romeo Ch. Momin also led a hands-on demonstration on the preparation of bio-organic fertiliser.
The programme concluded with the distribution of organic fertiliser manuals to attendees traveling from across the Garo Hills to participate in the training.
