Fuel Prices Surge in Manipur Amid Prolonged Highway Blockades

Imphal: A sustained economic blockade on national highways has triggered an acute fuel crisis in Manipur's Kangpokpi district. Tribal organizations have obstructed key routes like NH-02 to demand justice for the recent killing of six abducted Naga individuals, severely limiting the delivery of essential commodities to the region.

While official prices for petrol sit at Rs 107.19 per litre and LPG cylinders cost roughly Rs 1,064, the supply disruption has caused black-market rates to skyrocket. Panic buying and hoarding have pushed petrol prices to Rs 230 per litre, while the cost of an LPG cylinder has climbed as high as Rs 5,000. Many residents now rely on firewood for cooking as fuel reserves dwindle.

Government authorities at both the central and state levels insist that adequate stocks remain available. However, tensions and blocked roads continue to prevent fuel tankers and supply trucks from reaching Kuki-majority areas. The Manipur Department of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has warned the public against false reports, stating that some social media users are spreading misleading claims and creating unnecessary panic. The department noted, "Certain social media users and propagandists are spreading misleading claims, creating unnecessary panic and confusion among consumers and the public."
