Agartala: Four police officers in Tripura have been dismissed from service and arrested following allegations that they stole a portion of a narcotic drug seizure. The officers, who were stationed at the Teliamura Police Station, were taken into custody on Monday after an internal investigation confirmed they had diverted part of a consignment of Eskuf cough syrup.

The incident began on May 20 when the officers intercepted a vehicle in Teliamura and seized the cough syrup. A later review of security camera footage from the police station revealed that the officers removed approximately 245 bottles of the 100ml medication from the station's general diary room before the consignment was officially processed. This discrepancy led to the discovery that the officers had failed to account for the entire shipment.

Acting on orders from Director General of Police Anurag Dhankhar, authorities arrested Inspector Ajit Debbarma, Sub-Inspector Rajendra Reang, Women Sub-Inspector Sampa Das, and Assistant Sub-Inspector Sachindra Debbarma. A formal case was registered on May 24 based on a complaint filed by Additional Superintendent of Police Justin Joseph. The accused face charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

The investigation into the theft has been handed over to the Crime Branch Anti-Narcotics unit to ensure an impartial probe. Following their appearance in the Khowai District and Sessions Court on Monday, all four former officers were remanded to five days of police custody.
