Former Human Rights Chief Demands Accountability for Naga Civilian Killings

Imphal: Former Manipur Human Rights Commission chairperson Khaidem Mani has challenged the state government for its failure to register an FIR or make arrests regarding the killing of six Naga civilians. The victims were abducted and killed in Kangpokpi district, a crime for which Mani alleges the Kuki National Front-President (KNF-P) is responsible.

Mani pointed to public statements made by Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, who reportedly identified the KNF-P as the perpetrator. The group currently maintains a Suspension of Operations agreement with both the Indian and state governments. Family members of the victims have also implicated the Leilon Vaiphei village chief in the initial abduction.

Questioning the lack of official proceedings, Mani stated, "If a Deputy Chief Minister has already identified the group responsible for the killings and family members of the deceased have also named individuals allegedly involved in the abduction, what is preventing the government from registering cases and taking legal action?"

The senior advocate also raised concerns regarding the continued cabinet position of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, noting that her husband, Thangboi Kipgen, is a leader within the KNF-P. Mani criticized Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh for remaining silent on the issue. He warned that this perceived lack of accountability undermines the rule of law and demands an immediate, transparent investigation to ensure those responsible are prosecuted.
