Guwahati: Abhijit Majumdar, the former president of the Trinamool Congress in Assam, has resigned from the party after more than two decades of service. As a founding member who helped establish the party's presence in the state, Majumdar stated he could no longer support the organization's current trajectory.
Majumdar accused the party of abandoning its core values to focus on sectarian politics and specific vote-bank interests. He pointed to the pre-election induction of MLA Sherman Ali as evidence of this shift, arguing that the TMC has moved away from its goal of inclusive representation. He also expressed frustration regarding the party's handling of concerns raised by the Hindu Bengali community in Assam, claiming recent leadership decisions failed to protect the interests of that group.
The veteran politician further criticized the party for being West Bengal-centric. He challenged the TMC's assertion that it operates as a national organization, claiming that decision-making remains heavily concentrated under West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, leaving the Assam unit sidelined.
Addressing rumors regarding his exit, Majumdar denied being expelled from the organization. He clarified that his departure was a voluntary resignation and noted that any formal expulsion would have required a prior notice he never received.
