Guwahati: Assam Police arrested former legislator Ali Akbar Mian in Dhubri late Friday night following controversial social media comments directed at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and local law enforcement. A large group of officers surrounded Mian's home to secure the area before taking him into custody, acting on concerns that his rhetoric could disrupt public order in the border district ahead of Eid al-Adha.
The arrest follows statements Mian allegedly made regarding cattle sacrifice rituals for the upcoming holiday. In these comments, he reportedly insulted the Chief Minister and issued threats against police officers. Authorities have since moved him to the Dhubri Sadar Police Station, where he remained under heavy guard while undergoing questioning throughout the night.
Official records show that the Bilasipara Police Station has filed a criminal case against Mian. The charges include hate speech, criminal intimidation, and the incitement of violence against public servants. The case has gained attention due to Mian's political ties, as his wife currently serves as the President of the Dhubri Zilla Parishad.
Police investigators plan to present Mian before a local court on Saturday. They are expected to request his continued custody to facilitate further questioning as the legal process moves forward.
