Guwahati: Forest officials in Assam are hunting for answers. A full-grown female elephant turned up dead in a Tinsukia paddy field Tuesday morning. Villagers near the Dwarmara Reserve Forest found the animal lying close to their homes.

A local child claimed the elephant died after hitting live wires. That sparked immediate outrage among neighbors. Wildlife activist Devajit Moran wants authorities to take the minor's statement seriously. He urged a deep look into whether illegal electrocution or human activity caused the collapse.

Puspadhar Borgohain, the divisional forest officer, sent a team of experts to the site. They are collecting evidence and conducting a post-mortem to determine the truth. "It is too early to comment on the exact cause of death. The reason can only be ascertained after the post-mortem examination and the findings of the investigation," Borgohain said.

State officials are now tracking the situation. This death marks the second elephant loss in the Doomdooma division in three months. Conservationists warn that habitat loss and lethal electric fences are driving this deadly conflict. They demand stricter patrols to stop the killings.
