Guwahati: A wild elephant mauled a forest guard during a rescue mission in Boko on Sunday night. Jayanta Kalita, a staffer with the Singra Forest Division, took the brunt of the attack. He suffered deep wounds to his chest, thigh, and leg. He is a resident of Ramdia in the Hajo area of Kamrup district.

Locals sounded the alarm after hearing a distressed herd near the village. The department deployed a team to find a trapped elephant calf. The search went south fast. A rogue animal charged the crew while they scanned the brush with torches.

Rescuers rushed Kalita to the Boko Primary Health Centre. Doctors gave him first aid before shipping him to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for advanced care. Officials halted the search effort immediately. They cited extreme safety risks, noting the "presence of wild elephants in the area." Teams expect to resume work once the herd moves on.
