Imphal: The National Forensic Sciences University reported widespread tampering in audio clips linked to former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Investigators found 41 alterations and 23 gaps in the two-hour recording submitted for review. These findings surfaced Friday in the Supreme Court during a hearing regarding the 2023 ethnic violence in Manipur.
Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati argued for the dismissal of the petition filed by the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust. She told the court: "The latest forensic examination had detected several changes in the audio." The state and Centre now push to drop the case, which has remained active since 2024.
The petitioner claims the recordings prove Singh encouraged insurgents and protected weapons looters. Singh denies these charges. Petitioner counsel Prashant Bhushan challenged the NFSU report, citing a separate assessment by Truth Labs that claimed a 93 percent voice match to the former leader. The court refused to release the NFSU report publicly for now. Instead, the bench granted the petitioner time to file an affidavit and suggested Truth Labs could conduct another examination.
