Guwahati: Rising floodwaters slammed into Assam on Tuesday. Over 46,000 people across six districts now face a disaster that shows no sign of slowing down. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported that 221 villages are currently underwater, with Dhemaji taking the brunt of the impact. The state recorded its first death of the season after a woman drowned in floodwaters at Sissiborgaon. Dhemaji alone accounts for 45,841 of the total affected residents.
The Brahmaputra and Disang rivers surged past danger levels. They wiped out 3,809.8 hectares of farmland and wrecked crops across the region. Roads and public infrastructure also took a heavy hit. More than 88,000 animals are now in danger as water levels refuse to drop. Officials confirmed that "authorities are continuing rescue, relief and rehabilitation measures as high water levels persist and the flood situation remains a cause for concern in several districts."
Crews opened four relief camps to house 450 displaced people. Another six distribution centers are shipping food and essential supplies to families stuck in the deluge. Emergency teams remain on the ground to manage the fallout in Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Chirang, Lakhimpur, and Biswanath.
