Guwahati: Devastating floods continue to batter Assam. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reports 46,938 people impacted across 221 villages in six districts. Dhemaji, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Chirang, Lakhimpur, and Biswanath are all hit. Dhemaji accounts for 45,841 of those affected.
A woman drowned in Sissiborgaon, marking the state's first flood death. Officials have opened four relief camps for 450 displaced people. Six distribution centers are handing out food. The Brahmaputra and Disang rivers are currently above the danger mark. More than 88,000 animals are impacted, and 3,809.8 hectares of crops are underwater.
Disaster struck Dhemaji on June 28 when the Kemi River wiped out a 300-metre iron bridge. Connectivity between the Kemi-Purana Jelom area and Jonai Sadar is gone. Water levels rose at 11:00 AM and destroyed the span by 11:30 AM. Residents blame poor construction. One local stated, "concerns had been raised during the construction phase regarding the suitability of an iron structure over the Kemi River." Students now face major hurdles reaching school for upcoming exams.
In Bongaigaon, the Aie River flooded five to six villages on June 28. No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 Bhandara, Balapet, and Tentonpur are underwater. The Basbari Sub-Health Centre is flooded. Livestock are starving as fodder becomes scarce.
Chirang district faces its own crisis. Heavy rain triggered flooding on July 13 in the Panbari area. Water flowing from Bhutan hit Bijoypur village, forcing families to flee. Residents claim government aid has yet to reach them. Several roads remain partially submerged as families wait for help.
