Five Detained Following Violent Anti-Drug Raid in Assam

Guwahati: Nagaon police detained five individuals on June 4 following a violent anti-drug operation in Herapati village. The incident began when local residents targeted suspected drug peddlers, but the situation quickly escalated into vandalism and looting.

Reports indicate that at least eight houses were damaged, with furniture and other household belongings set on fire during the chaos. Beyond property destruction, victims reported the theft of gold ornaments and cash. Witnesses observed the mob wielding knives and other sharp weapons, creating a sense of panic throughout the village. One neighbour stated, "Neighbours alleged that they attempted to stop the mob from vandalising the houses but were unable to control the situation."

Locals clarified that one of the suspected peddlers targeted by the group had already moved to the Chalchali area, although his family home remained at the site. Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the arson and looting. Police officials are urging the public to avoid vigilantism and instead allow law enforcement to handle drug-related crimes through official legal channels.
