Gangtok: The 2026 Kailash Mansarovar Yatra officially began on June 20 as the first group of pilgrims crossed the India-China border through Sikkim's Nathu La Pass. Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur flagged off the journey, joined by Tourism Minister Tshering Thendup Bhutia and representatives from the Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation.

This initial batch consists of 44 people, including 32 men and 12 women. The group is supported by four liaison officers and a medical officer. The pilgrims hail from various Indian states, such as Delhi, Punjab, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu. Before their departure, all participants successfully passed a mandatory final medical examination.

Preparation for the crossing involved extensive planning by state officials. Chief Secretary R. Telang oversaw logistics ranging from medical support and road conditions to network connectivity and customs procedures. One participant noted the efficiency of the process, stating the experience was smooth and well-organised as they prepared for the darshan of Lord Shiva.

The pilgrimage, which holds deep religious value for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains, is managed by the Ministry of External Affairs. It is conducted via two primary routes, including the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and the Nathu La Pass. Governor Mathur shared his well wishes for the travellers, expressing hope that they would share positive memories of their journey and the state's hospitality upon their return.
