Gangtok: The 2026 Kailash Mansarovar Yatra officially began on June 15 as the first group of pilgrims touched down at Bagdogra Airport. This initial contingent consists of 41 travelers from 12 states, supported by two liaison officers, one medical officer, and a team of four support staff already stationed in Gangtok.
Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation officials, including Arjun Mangar and Biswas Gurung, welcomed the visitors at the airport. Liaison officers Phuntshok Tashi Dhopthapa and Harkaman Limbu are tasked with overseeing the group as they travel to Gangtok for final preparations. Once in the city, the pilgrims will complete administrative requirements and undergo acclimatization before heading to the high-altitude Nathula Pass.
The pilgrimage draws people from across India, with Delhi sending the largest group of 11 participants, followed by Maharashtra with six. Other travelers represent Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Bihar.
To guarantee a secure journey, the government has finalized various infrastructural support systems, such as emergency response networks and medical screening facilities. In a statement regarding the commencement of the journey, the Government of Sikkim said it hopes for a "safe, successful and spiritually fulfilling Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026."
