Fire engineer contests claim naming Sivhangi Sonowal as Assam's first female graduate

Guwahati: A recent claim identifying Sivhangi Sonowal as the first woman from Assam to graduate from the National Fire Service College in Nagpur has been challenged by Padma Mushahary. A fire engineer from the Chirang district, Mushahary maintains she earned a Bachelor of Technology in Fire Engineering three years earlier, in 2023, from the Institute of Engineering and Science in Indore.

The public controversy began after Assam Cabinet Minister Ashok Singhal and official social media accounts belonging to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Sonowal, describing her as the first woman from her home state to reach the milestone. This narrative was subsequently amplified by various media outlets and online platforms.

Mushahary, who is the daughter of Taneswar Basumatary and Doli Mushahary, currently works as a Senior Fire Engineer for Oil India Limited in Duliajan. She stated that describing Sonowal as the first woman from Assam could be misleading unless the claim is specifically limited to graduates of the National Fire Service College. She noted that such recognition should be accurate, arguing that "describing Sonowal as the first woman from Assam could be misleading unless the claim was specifically limited to graduates of NFSC."
