Fast Track Court Frames Charges in Zubeen Garg Death Case

Guwahati: A special Fast Track Court in Guwahati has formally framed charges against seven individuals regarding the death of Assamese musical icon Zubeen Garg. Justice Sharmila Bhuyan presided over the hearing on Tuesday, clearing the path for the trial to begin on June 8.

The seven accused are Siddhartha Sharma, Shyamkanu Mahanta, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, Amritprabha Mahanta, Sandipan Garg, Nandeswar Borah, and Paresh Baishya. Prosecutors filed charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, covering offenses such as murder, criminal conspiracy, extortion, and cheating.

Specific individual charges were also applied during the proceedings. Shyamkanu Mahanta faces counts of extortion, cheating, and destruction of evidence. Siddhartha Sharma and Shekhar Jyoti Goswami are charged with criminal breach of trust, while Amritprabha Mahanta is accused of destroying evidence. Additionally, Sandipan Garg faces charges related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Special Public Prosecutor Ziaul Kamar stated that the court intends to conduct the trial on a day-to-day basis, provided no stay orders are issued by the Gauhati High Court. Following the session, Garima Garg expressed her faith in the judicial process. Meanwhile, Siddhartha Sharma has filed a separate bail application as the trial moves forward.
