Itanagar: A 51-year-old man from the Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh, Kamlo Mophuk, was found dead last week in Andhra Pradesh following a journey that his family describes as a terrifying ordeal. Mophuk left Tinsukia by train on May 16, 2026, to visit his daughter in Bengaluru. During the trip, he claimed he was assaulted by unidentified people, leading him to fear for his safety and deboard the train at Ongole Railway Station on May 18.
The victim reached out to his family through a series of distress calls as he sought help from local authorities. During his final communication on the morning of May 19, he reported being followed by strangers before his phone went dead. His daughters spent the next several days searching for him, but they claim officials showed a lack of urgency and negligence toward his situation.
The search efforts gained momentum only after Arunachal Minister Wangki Lowang intervened and coordinated with officials in Andhra Pradesh. Police and forest teams eventually located Mophuk's body near a cemetery using his mobile phone data. Although authorities reportedly recovered the body on May 21, the family did not receive notification until May 23.
This two-day delay has sparked significant anger among relatives and community members in Lazu. They are now calling for a formal inquiry into the initial assault, the lack of police cooperation during Mophuk's search for help, and the handling of the recovery process. Andhra Pradesh police and railway authorities have yet to issue a formal statement, and the family is currently awaiting the results of the post-mortem report.
