Imphal: Families are demanding accountability following the recovery of six bodies suspected to be those of individuals abducted in Manipur last May. Four of the six victims have been identified so far at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences morgue, where staff began the identification process on Thursday afternoon. Post-mortem examinations remain pending.
Family members reported that the remains were in a horrific state when discovered. Paisho Thuimai, who lost two brothers, described the scene as deeply traumatic. "Out of the six bodies, only one body was intact and fully identified. It appeared that he was thrown into water with his hands tied behind his back. The remaining bodies were mutilated, butchered and beheaded. We could not find single joints in some cases. In one case, the head part could not be found," Thuimai stated.
While officials have not confirmed the official recovery site, reports suggest the remains were found near Leilol Vaiphei village. The discovery drew visits from several political leaders, including Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam and former Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh, who met with the grieving families at the hospital.
Despite the high-level visits, family members voiced deep frustration with the pace of the investigation. Thuimai expressed that the prolonged delays have diminished their trust in the authorities. He called on both the state and central governments to prioritize the case and ensure those responsible for the violence face justice.
