Imphal: Former Manipur BJP president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. The Returning Officer of the Manipur Legislative Assembly confirmed her victory on June 11 after all other candidates withdrew their nominations.
The election was required because the term of the incumbent BJP Rajya Sabha member, Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba, concludes on June 21. Several BJP legislators, including Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, attended the official declaration in Imphal.
Addressing the media at the state BJP office, Sharda Devi emphasized her future legislative focus. "As a woman myself, my priorities would be development-related issues concerning women and strengthening their empowerment," she said.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand praised the result on social media, noting that Sharda Devi brings significant administrative and political experience to the role. The state BJP leadership also celebrated her appointment, describing it as a recognition of her long-standing dedication to both the party and the people of Manipur.
The BJP currently holds a strong majority in the 60-member assembly with 36 seats, providing a stable foundation for the party as it fills the state's lone upper house seat.
