England Dominates Sri Lanka in Women's T20 World Cup Opener

Shillong: England launched their home Women's T20 World Cup campaign with a dominant 87-run victory over Sri Lanka at Edgbaston on Friday. In front of 14,865 fans, the hosts posted a record-setting tournament total of 219/1, effectively dismantling the Sri Lankan side for just 132.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge led the charge with an unbeaten 105 from 62 balls, marking her third T20 century. She shared a 135-run opening partnership with Amy Jones, who contributed 53 runs. After the match, Wyatt-Hodge dedicated her performance to her family, noting, "It was great fun out there. My century celebration was for my daughter Daisy. I hope TV got it."

Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt added an explosive unbeaten 46, a performance that saw her overtake Charlotte Edwards as England’s highest T20 World Cup run-scorer. Sciver-Brunt now holds 784 runs in the tournament.

The bowling attack proved equally lethal, led by Freya Kemp. The left-arm pacer claimed a career-best 4-21, including a decisive spell that reduced Sri Lanka to 92-8. Wyatt-Hodge also made a significant impact in the field, taking a spectacular diving catch to dismiss Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu early in the chase.
