Guwahati: The Enforcement Directorate is taking over the probe into a massive 34-kilogram gold seizure in Guwahati. Authorities caught Akshay Bansode of Maharashtra on June 30 with the stash. The haul is worth 54 crore rupees. Latasil police netted the man in the Kharghuli area based on a tip.
The investigation suggests a complex international racket. Bansode allegedly admitted to working with contacts in Manipur to move gold from Myanmar. Investigators now think Guwahati served as a main transit point for shipments bound for Maharashtra. Dubai appears to be another source for the precious metal.
Police seized four mobile phones and a small amount of cash from the suspect. Forensic teams found evidence of a deep-rooted syndicate. Officials expect the ED to dig into hawala dealings and shell companies to dismantle the money laundering front. According to official sources, the case involves a wider transnational smuggling network and suspected money laundering activities.
