Shillong: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui wants young people to turn their local skills into businesses. He spoke Thursday at the Amlarem block closing ceremony for the 2026 Chief Minister Youth Engagement Programme. He told students to look at their surroundings for opportunity. They must stop ignoring traditional knowledge.
Students from schools across the Amlarem Sub-Division competed in art, sports, and culture. Events included quiz competitions, folk song, painting, and tug of war. Rymbui and guest of honour Vevotolu Kezo, the SDO for Amlarem, watched performances by Sohkha Government Higher Secondary School and Koinonia Lamin of Laishnong Higher Secondary School. The BDO for Amlarem, Dr. D Lyngdoh, also attended.
Rymbui cited dry smoked fish production in Umladkhur and betel nut cultivation in War Jaintia as prime examples of untapped economic potential. He noted that innovation can modernize these practices. Rymbui stated, "CMYEP was not merely about winning prizes, but about giving young people opportunities to express themselves, share ideas and build confidence."
Kezo pushed for a clear path for talented kids. She wants them to move from local block events to state and international arenas. Rymbui ended the day by reminding the crowd to prioritize their sporting talents alongside their academics.
