Kohima: The Eastern Nagaland Peoples Organisation has condemned the Nagaland government for allegedly reversing its position on the Memorandum of Agreement for the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority. Signed on February 5, 2026, in New Delhi, the agreement outlines a self-governing authority designed to grant the region legislative, executive, and financial autonomy.
The organization claims the state government is now attempting to modify core principles of the deal, which would effectively dismantle the agreement. Leaders of the group described these objections as a lack of seriousness and a betrayal of the people living in Eastern Nagaland. They noted that the state government previously supported the terms, which align with a settlement proposed by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2023.
Disputes have also emerged regarding the role of the Nagaland Advocate General. While the state government raised objections after the signing, the organization argues it is unacceptable to claim the Advocate General was excluded from years of negotiations. They maintain that any internal administrative failures should not be used to block the implementation of the authority.
The organization warned that the state government must accept full responsibility if its actions force the central government to take measures that could impact the broader state. Calling for good faith, the group urged local officials to honor their commitments to ensure the stability and development of Eastern Nagaland.
