Guwahati: Assam has launched the Northeast's first Integrated Waste Management Facility at Lekai in Dibrugarh. The plant, which cost Rs 25 crore to develop under the Assam Waste Management Project, aims to revolutionize how the region treats municipal, industrial, and biomedical waste.
Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan inaugurated the site on Friday. Describing the project as a landmark initiative, Phukan said it would contribute significantly to Dibrugarh's development as a modern and sustainable urban centre. Local officials emphasized that the facility can process over 1,000 metric tonnes of waste every day, serving Dibrugarh along with nearby towns such as Duliajan and Chabua.
The plant handles a diverse range of waste, including industrial output from Duliajan and Naharkatia. By streamlining collection and transportation in coordination with local urban bodies, the facility helps the state meet environmental compliance standards while mitigating degradation in Upper Assam. This initiative aligns with the government's broader strategy to position Dibrugarh as the state's second capital.
Other attendees at the opening included District Commissioner Bikram Kairi and Pollution Control Board Chairman Arup Kumar Mishra. Authorities noted that the infrastructure could eventually expand to serve additional waste management needs across the state, setting a new benchmark for scientific disposal in the region.
