Guwahati: The Dibrugarh district administration cleared approximately 60 families from the banks of the Brahmaputra River in the Maijan area on Monday. The eviction operation focused on nine bighas of government land that had been occupied for over a decade, with some residents having built permanent RCC houses.
The action followed a directive from the District and Sessions Court in Dibrugarh, with authorities serving formal notices before commencing the demolition. While a significant police presence was deployed to maintain order, the process remained peaceful as residents removed their belongings before excavators leveled the structures.
Many displaced residents reported they had been defrauded by land brokers, claiming they paid between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 3 lakh for land they believed was legal. One evicted woman stated, “Seven years ago we paid Rs 1.5 lakh to a broker who assured us the land was legal. Now we have lost both our money and our home.”
Samujjwal Borah, Circle Officer of the Dibrugarh East Revenue Circle, confirmed that residents cooperated with the administration during the clearance. He noted, “We had made adequate security arrangements keeping in mind the scale of the eviction, but the residents cooperated fully with the administration. There was no untoward incident during the entire operation.”
Displaced families are now calling for a thorough investigation into the brokers involved. Residents argued that an organized racket misled them into purchasing government property for personal gain, and they are urging local authorities to pursue legal action against the individuals responsible for the fraudulent sales.
