Custodial Death Probe Initiated After Undertrial Found Dead in Namsai Lock-up

Guwahati: A 35-year-old undertrial prisoner, Biru Kharia, was found dead inside a police lock-up in the Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh on the night of April 27. Kharia, an Assam native residing in Lathao, had been arrested on April 26 following an FIR related to the death of his wife, Pujamani Kharia. He was remanded to five days of police custody by a local court following a mandatory medical examination.

According to Namsai Superintendent of Police (in-charge) Thutan Jamba, the deceased was discovered hanging in the cell around 10:15 pm using a sari. In response to the incident, authorities have registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194 of the BNSS and initiated both departmental and magisterial inquiries to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
