Itanagar: The Indian National Congress has formally questioned the decision of Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu to remain in office following a Supreme Court directive that mandates a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into corruption allegations. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh described the Chief Minister's continued tenure as a gross travesty of the judicial process, noting that Khandu also oversees the Public Works Department, which manages the very files required for the investigation.
The controversy stems from an April 6, 2026, Supreme Court ruling issued by a three-judge bench led by Justice Vikram Nath. The court ordered a preliminary inquiry into claims that public works contracts valued at Rs 1,270 crore were awarded to firms linked to the Chief Minister's family between January 2015 and December 2025. In its order, the bench emphasized that state benefits should never be granted based on the personal whims of administrative functionaries, asserting that the potential conflict of interest at the highest levels of government warranted an independent, impartial investigation.
