Kohima: Nagaland marked World Environment Day on June 5 with a series of community-led events aimed at environmental conservation. Across the state, various institutions, student unions, and government bodies organized tree planting initiatives, waste management awareness programs, and extensive cleanup campaigns to encourage civic responsibility.
In Kohima, the District Legal Services Authority led a plantation and cleanliness drive, drawing participation from Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir. Volunteers planted 130 saplings, including chestnut and wild apple, along the route from Upper Agri Colony to Kohima Science College. Meanwhile, in Pughoboto, officials and local residents signed a formal climate action pledge to reduce energy waste and minimize the use of single-use plastics.
Student organizations were central to the day’s activities. The Angami Students’ Union and Chakhroma Students’ Union conducted a joint social work initiative in Chümoukedima. Reflecting on the effort, Viketouzo Yashü, Environment and Sanitation Secretary of the Angami Students’ Union, said, "World Environment Day should not be confined to speeches alone but reflected in consistent actions."
Environmental efforts extended throughout the state. The Chakhroma Youth Organisation planted 500 saplings across dozens of villages and colonies, while the Human Rights Help Association Nagaland launched an anti-plastic campaign in Dimapur. Other notable efforts included Fazl Ali College’s campus greening in Mokokchung, the Sechü Zubza Students’ Union’s cleanup drive, and Nagaland University’s participation in the national Plant4Mother campaign. These collaborative efforts highlighted a collective commitment to maintaining a cleaner and healthier ecosystem for the region.
