Imphal: A ten-member delegation representing the Council for Baptist Churches in North East India (CBCNEI) and the Manipur Baptist Convention (MBC) met with Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho in Imphal on Monday. The delegation sought to address the escalating tensions between the Naga and Kuki communities following the tragic killing of three church leaders on May 13 at Zero Point, located between Kotlen and Kotzim in the Kangpokpi district.
During the meeting, the church representatives volunteered to act as mediators to facilitate dialogue and reconciliation. Chief Minister Khemchand expressed his appreciation for their initiative, encouraging the leaders to engage with all concerned parties to restore peace. As part of their mission, the church delegation will divide into two teams to conduct outreach efforts across the region.
The team headed to Kangpokpi will first visit the families of the three deceased church leaders to offer condolences, supported by a government assurance of ex-gratia payments. Following these visits, they intend to hold discussions with local Kuki church leaders. Simultaneously, the second team will travel to the Naga-dominated Senapati district to engage with Naga church leaders and civil society organizations to address the current climate and the urgent hostage crisis.
