Guwahati: Tension exploded Saturday night at the Morigaon residence of Congress MLA Asif Nazar. More than 1,000 Alim-Ulama arrived for a scheduled prayer meeting. The event quickly spiraled into chaos. Protesters chanted Congress go back and AIUDF Zindabad. Chairs were tossed and broken throughout the venue.
Nazar remains a target for local frustration. On September 22, BJP members blocked his vehicle at Garoimari. They shouted slogans demanding he leave the area. A physical scuffle erupted between Congress and BJP workers. The Morigaon Senior Superintendent of Police finally intervened to extract the MLA from the mob.
Political friction is mounting across the state. Violence broke out during a Congress campaign run in Samaguri linked to the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll. A convoy carrying Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel faced a barrage of stones. Congress leadership blames BJP supporters for the attack. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dismissed those claims. Sarma insisted, "the Samaguri episode was a clash between rival factions within the Congress." He warned party leaders to manage their own house before the streets catch fire.
