Chakhroma Youth Organisation issues 20-day ultimatum over Moava village dispute

Kohima: The Chakhroma Youth Organisation has issued a 20-day ultimatum to the Nagaland state government, demanding immediate intervention in an ongoing land dispute involving Moava village. CYO president Medochuzo Medoze and general secretary Kekhrievikho Khro stated they are frustrated by the government's lack of action following a formal submission made by the Chakhroma Public Organisation on May 2, 2026.

At the center of the dispute is the status of the Kuki community residing in Moava. The CYO argues that under Angami customary law, residents are tenants rather than landowners and have failed to pay required traditional land taxes. The organisation pointed to a 1981 judgment and a 2010 administrative order that previously mandated these payments, alleging that the village has consistently ignored these legal directives.

The youth group asserts that the village's refusal to acknowledge traditional ownership violates the Nagaland Village and Area Councils Act of 1978. To resolve the matter, the CYO has requested the derecognition of Moava village, the suspension of government development funds, and the removal of the village head. They also urged officials to address the actions of three specific individuals involved in the conflict to prevent further escalation.

Expressing the gravity of the situation, the organisation warned that the government must act swiftly to prevent public unrest. The group stated that the matter had become a "serious concern" and cautioned that failing to meet these demands within the 20-day timeframe could lead to further agitation.
