Kohima: Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio have jointly launched the 'Cluster-based Coffee Value Chain Development Mission' for Nagaland. With a total financial outlay of Rs 175 crore, the project aims to transform the state into a premium, single-origin coffee economy, moving beyond raw production to a model featuring branding, traceability, and international market integration.
As part of the initiative, two pilot clusters have been established to spearhead the program: Tuophema village in the Kohima district will focus on Arabica coffee, while Ghotovi village in the Niuland district will specialize in Robusta coffee. The program encompasses a wide range of infrastructure development, including the establishment of hi-tech nurseries, post-harvest processing facilities, and specialized roasteries to ensure the highest quality for domestic and global distribution.
Addressing the launch, Minister Scindia characterized the initiative as a 'Whole of India' approach that unites government ministries, farmers, and private-sector experts. The project seeks to elevate 'Coffees of Nagaland' through aggressive branding campaigns, participation in international trade fairs, and the promotion of experiential coffee tourism. The Minister emphasized that the ultimate success of the mission hinges on the ability to secure premium global market positions, thereby ensuring sustainable and increased income for local farming communities.
