Guwahati: Khadija Begum Laskar is dead. She jumped into a pond near her home in Rangirghat Part-II on Monday, ending a life her family says was destroyed by relentless greed. Locals pulled her from the water and rushed her to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, but doctors could not save her.

Khadija married Piar Hussain Barbhuiya in August 2025. Her brother, Abdul Mumit Laskar, claims the abuse started only months after the wedding. According to the family, the husband and his relatives repeatedly targeted her with demands for dowry. Community elders tried to intervene, but the harassment never stopped.

The victim had returned to her parents' house recently. Her brother says the husband kept showing up to pressure her. On the day she died, her brothers were away from the house when she took the jump. Abdul Mumit Laskar stated, "The family has lodged a written complaint with the police against her husband and members of her in-laws' family, alleging dowry-related harassment that drove her to take the extreme step."

Police have taken the formal complaint and started digging into the case. Officials sent her body for a post-mortem to determine the official cause of death. Authorities have yet to confirm the family's accusations, and the accused have not spoken on the matter.
