Guwahati: BRICS countries signed the Guwahati Declaration in Assam to clamp down on drug trafficking and organized crime. The deal follows a two-day meeting of heads of anti-drug agencies. Nations pledged to share intelligence and trade secrets to disrupt smuggling networks. They aim to use better digital tools to track criminals.

Member states are worried about synthetic drugs. Organized gangs now use the darknet and maritime routes to move goods. The group plans to target precursor chemical diversion and the misuse of virtual assets. They also want to focus on public health and protecting children from drug abuse.

Anurag Garg, Director General of India's Narcotics Control Bureau, pushed for a stronger alliance. He warned that crime syndicates work fast across borders. During his closing remarks, Garg said modern drug trafficking networks operate across borders and jurisdictions, making closer international cooperation essential.

Garg suggested setting up a virtual working group. This team would handle real-time intelligence and cross-border training. India also presented its own plan for 2026-2029. That roadmap focuses on busting networks and improving rehabilitation services. Representatives from Brazil, China, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates joined the talks.
