Guwahati: Five young men in Assam face a unique environmental mandate after being caught illegally felling trees in a reserved forest. The Bongaigaon youths, who were apprehended near Chiponchila village within the Aie Valley Forest Division, have been ordered to plant and care for 1,500 saplings.

Local Forest Department officials collaborated with residents to choose a restorative punishment over traditional punitive measures. This initiative aims to help the individuals understand the necessity of ecological protection and conservation.

The group recently completed a large-scale planting drive in Chiponchila village to fulfill the first stage of their sentence. Beyond the initial planting, the department has placed the youths in charge of the saplings' long-term welfare. Officials stated the goal is "promoting environmental responsibility" among those who damaged the region's natural resources.

Community members and officials have praised the decision for focusing on corrective action. By requiring the youths to nurture the trees until they mature, the project aims to increase the local green cover while ensuring lasting accountability.
