Imphal: Bharatiya Janata Party leader Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi is poised to become the next Rajya Sabha member from Manipur after appearing as the only candidate for the state's single seat. Returning Officer and Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretary Rohit Sapam verified her nomination papers on June 9, confirming her eligibility for the role. Because no other candidates entered the race, her selection is now considered a formality.

Sharda Devi is set to make history as the second woman from the state to serve as a Parliamentarian, following in the footsteps of Kim Gangte. Her path to victory was solidified when the Congress party opted not to field an opposing candidate. Observers note her impending victory as a significant step for women in the region's political landscape.

The current legislative assembly, which consists of 58 sitting members, saw no competition for the seat this cycle. The election process saw her documentation cleared, with official confirmation stating that "Sharda Devi's documents were found to be valid."

Sharda Devi will succeed Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba, whose term concludes on June 21. She will also become only the second person to win the seat unopposed, marking a rare occurrence since the late Congress leader Abdul Salam secured his position without a contest in 2014.
