Kohima: The Bharatiya Janata Party has further consolidated its political presence in Northeast India following decisive victories in the Assembly by-elections for the Koridang constituency in Nagaland and the Dharmanagar seat in Tripura. These results were officially declared on May 4, marking a significant step in the party's ongoing efforts to expand its electoral and organizational influence across the region.
In Nagaland, BJP candidate Daochier I. Imchen claimed the Koridang ST seat, filling the vacancy created by the passing of senior leader Imkong L. Imchen. The victory followed a strategic consolidation of support, as BJP leader Imchainba Jamir withdrew from the contest, effectively neutralizing the challenge from Congress candidate T. Chalukumba Ao. Meanwhile, in Tripura, Jahar Chakraborti secured the Dharmanagar seat for the BJP, defeating opponents from the Congress and the CPI(M). This by-election was called following the death of four-time MLA and Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen.
Voter engagement in these constituencies was notable during the April 9 polling, with Koridang recording a strong turnout of 75.06 percent and Dharmanagar seeing 70.09 percent participation. These figures contrasted with lower turnouts reported elsewhere, such as in Karnataka, where Bagalkot and Davanagere South recorded 54.82 percent and 49.66 percent respectively.
The Election Commission of India had organized by-elections across eight constituencies in six states. While voting in Gujarat and Maharashtra took place on April 23, the process in Goa was cancelled by the Bombay High Court. These latest wins underscore the party's steady growth in the Northeast, continuing a trend of electoral gains observed in recent years.
