Itanagar: A high-ranking militant finally quit. Pongngoi Wangnowham, 37, walked into the Superintendent of Police office in Longding, Arunachal Pradesh, to lay down his arms this past Saturday. He had spent nearly twenty years in the shadows as an active member of the banned NSCN-K (Angmai) group.
Wangnowham hails from Kamkah village. He joined the ranks of the proscribed outfit back in 2005. His decision to surrender comes after months of pressure from local law enforcement and military units.
The surrender unfolded before a joint delegation of the Arunachal Pradesh Police, the 24th Assam Rifles, and various intelligence officers. Authorities view this event as a direct result of their strategy to draw fighters back into civilian life. Longding Superintendent of Police Dekio Gumja stated, "The surrender is part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to encourage militants to return to the mainstream and strengthen peace and stability in the region."
