Guwahati: Nearly five kilometers of the India-Bangladesh border in Assam stays open. The Border Guard Bangladesh refuses to back down on construction objections. Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora confirmed the status to the Assembly on Monday.

Crews finished barbed wire fencing along 228.541 km of the total 267.5-km international boundary. A specific 4.35-km gap sits along the Kushiyara River in Sribhumi district. Indian citizens live right on that riverbank. Bora explained, "fencing work could not be carried out because of objections from the Border Guard Bangladesh."

Rivers block the remaining 34.609 km of unfenced territory. This includes 30.37 km in Dhubri and 4.239 km in South Salmara-Mankachar. The Border Security Force watches these open gaps using boat outposts and the Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System to track movement across the water.
