Guwahati: Bangladeshi officials have agreed to release Ranjit Das, an Indian farmer abducted from the international border in Assam's Cachar district. The agreement follows intensive high-level negotiations between Indian and Bangladeshi authorities aimed at resolving the border crisis.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning while the 60-year-old farmer was working on land near the Surma River. Witnesses reported that six individuals arrived by boat, confronted Das, and forcibly took him across the border. Indian border guards responded to the scene after hearing cries for help, but the group had already escaped.
Local leaders, including North Karimganj MLA Zakaria Ahmed and Katigorah MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, confirmed the positive outcome following discussions between border forces and senior officials. While the breakthrough has calmed the local community, official confirmation of the handover remains pending. As of the latest report, the farmer has not yet returned to Indian soil.
The abduction sparked significant alarm in the border region, where residents have maintained a vigil near the boundary. MLA Zakaria Ahmed noted the severity of the situation, stating, "After nearly eight hours of anxiety and uncertainty, a positive breakthrough has emerged in the case of Indian farmer Ranjit Das." Local officials, including Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya, continue to monitor the situation closely as they await the finalization of his return.
