Guwahati: The district administration of Dibrugarh, Assam, cleared 60 families from government land along the Brahmaputra riverbank on Monday. The eviction took place in the Maijan area following a directive from the District and Sessions Court. Authorities acted after serving notices to the occupants who had settled on nine bighas of state-owned land, some of whom had built permanent concrete structures.
Many of the displaced residents claimed they were victims of a scam. They reported paying between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 3 lakh to middlemen who falsely assured them the plots were legally approved. Following the operation, these families urged officials to investigate the brokers who deceived them into purchasing government property.
A heavy police presence was stationed at the site to prevent unrest, though the clearing process finished without conflict as residents removed their possessions before excavators began their work. Dibrugarh East Revenue Circle Officer Samujjwal Borah oversaw the operation and noted the peaceful nature of the event. He stated, "Adequate security arrangements were made considering the scale of the operation, and the cooperation of residents ensured that the eviction proceeded without any untoward incident."
