Guwahati: Youths in Assam’s Sribhumi district took matters into their own hands on Thursday, May 28, launching a public donation drive to repair a crumbling National Highway. Residents have long suffered from the poor state of local roads, which has disrupted daily travel and transportation across the region.
Despite repeated complaints filed with elected representatives, including local MLAs and the area's MP, no significant repairs have been made. The protesters also raised the issue with the District Magistrate and officials from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, such as Zakaria Ahmed, Panna Kripanath, and Mallah. They even submitted a formal written note to local officials outlining their frustration before beginning the collection.
The protest drew widespread community support, with both Hindu and Muslim residents contributing funds following Eid-ul-Zoha prayers. The group collected 8,250 rupees, which they intend to put toward patching the damaged road. This unconventional protest serves as a pointed critique of the lack of government oversight and infrastructure development in the district.
