Guwahati: The All Assam Motor Transport Association (AAMTA) is raising passenger transport fares by 70 percent beginning July 1. This decision follows the rising costs of fuel, vehicle maintenance, and spare parts that have squeezed profit margins for operators across the state.
The association reached this conclusion after submitting a memorandum to the Assam Transport Commissioner regarding the financial strain caused by persistent diesel price hikes. Operators contend that the last major fare revision occurred in November 2011, when the Assam Transport Department approved a 25 percent increase. At that time, diesel cost approximately Rs 66 per litre.
The transport body emphasized that the current economic situation threatens the viability of their services. The association warned that many operators are currently struggling to keep their businesses afloat. They stated, "The fare hike is necessary to ensure the continued operation of passenger transport services across Assam."
Under the new proposal, the minimum bus fare will rise to Rs 20. The association expects to release a complete chart covering specific routes and vehicle categories in the coming weeks.
