Gangtok: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority announced plans to implement the Cell Broadcast System to provide citizens with instant, location-specific warnings during natural disasters. Developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics under the Department of Telecommunications, the technology allows authorities to transmit critical information directly to mobile phones within a designated area.
This system delivers alerts as pop-up messages, accompanied by distinct vibration patterns and loud notification tones to ensure they capture public attention. Unlike standard text messages, these broadcasts reach all devices in a targeted zone simultaneously, maintaining functionality even during periods of heavy network congestion. The system is compatible with 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G networks and supports multiple languages.
Officials stated that the technology will provide warnings for various hazards, including cyclones, floods, lightning, and heavy rainfall. According to the ASDMA, the system has proven its value in other regions, noting that it has "proven effective in real disaster situations in several states, strengthening preparedness and response capabilities."
The rollout follows a successful nationwide pilot project concluded in May. By providing timely updates to both residents and visitors, the initiative aims to protect vulnerable populations in remote areas and improve the state's overall emergency response strategy.
